But all of them paled in comparison to the first and greatest evil of J. Tolkien 's legendarium: Morgoth. While he may not be as well known as his successors, no one was more dangerous than Morgoth and his machinations. Morgoth was the main antagonist of Tolkien's The Silmarillion , which detailed the ancient history of Middle-earth. He was the original Dark Lord and the master of Sauron. Tolkien made him a truly diabolical figure who was responsible for all the evils that plagued Middle-earth, even long after his defeat. Fans who did not read The Silmarillion still knew Morgoth's name, as Tolkien mentioned him a few times throughout The Lord of the Rings. However, these occasional references understated just how crucial he was to the entirety of Tolkien's legendarium. In the first episode, Galadriel described how Morgoth "destroyed the very light of [the Elves'] home," leading to a ruinous war. In the aftermath, the Elves departed for Middle-earth, setting into motion the main plot of the series. While The Rings of Power took several liberties with its source material, this event came directly from Tolkien's writings, and it was but one of many vile deeds that Morgoth performed. Morgoth was not the main antagonist of The Rings of Power; that role instead belonged to his successor, Sauron.

Among these spirits was one named Melkor. Of these was a Maiar named Mairon, later known as Sauron. Bitter, Melkor set himself against the other Valar. Whenever the Valar worked to better the world, Melkor disrupted their efforts. For a long while, Melkor fought alone against the might of all the other Valar and Maiar of Arda, and he long held the upper hand. During this time, Arda was kept essentially shapeless, as Melkor ruined virtually every early work that the other Valar attempted to create. Fortunately for them, the mighty Valar Tulkas eventually descended to Arda, and his strength tipped the balance in favor of the Valar.
Melkor is the most powerful of the Valar but he turns to darkness and is renamed Morgoth, the primary antagonist of Arda. All evil in the world of Middle-earth ultimately stems from him. Melkor has been interpreted as analogous to Satan , once the greatest of all God's angels, Lucifer , but fallen through pride ; he rebels against his creator. Morgoth has been likened, too, to John Milton 's fallen angel in Paradise Lost , again a Satan-figure. Tom Shippey has written that The Silmarillion maps the Book of Genesis with its creation and its fall, even Melkor having begun with good intentions. Marjorie Burns has commented that Tolkien used the Norse god Odin to create aspects of several characters, the wizard Gandalf getting some of his good characteristics, while Morgoth gets his destructiveness, malevolence, and deceit. During this time, Melkor built his second, lesser fortress ofAngband in the west, as a defense from the West should the Valar attack. While Eru had blessed the other Valar with a portion of his thoughts and insights, making each absolute in their respective specialties, Melkor was blessed with greater power and a wider breadth of knowledge.
