I love painting furniture and breathing life into a piece that has been let down over the years. A few screws were missing and the surface was scratched a little but I was adamant I will give these tables a second chance in life. As with all furniture, I first clean it with soapy cloth and wipe it dry. I thought perhaps to paint them completely and put a decoupage feature on. So I started to work away and dismantled the tables and started sanding the tops. Once the tops were sanded I noticed that underneath the yucky varnish was gorgeous wood grain. I straight away decided against painting the tops and instead went with the woodstain to bring out the beautiful wood grain.

Thank you for sharing your upcycled table project. These step-down tables were all the rage back in the day, it's great to see that you've given these tables a second chance. The timber top finish is wonderful, what sealer did you use on it and how long did the entire paint job take to finish? I sanded the table top back with an orbital sander and then four coats of Monocel Waterbased Clear Wood Varnish. This is my favourite varnish I've used so far. It enhances the grain of the timber without making it an orange tinge which a lot of varnishes tend to do. Thanks for that extra information about your upcycled tables.
