Paper plate fish aquarium

I started by paper plate fish aquarium out a set of sea animal coloring pages for the kids to color and cut out. I printed nine on one page in order to shrink the images down to the size we needed. While the kids were busy coloring their sea animals and cutting them out, I worked on preparing the paper plates.

My kids are always wanting to cut, paint, glue, or just scribble on a piece of paper. Crafts are always a favorite activity and I often try to come up with different activities based on what they find appealing at the moment. Most recently it has been fish. We decided over the weekend to make our own little 3D fish scene using paper plates. I had heavy-duty Chinet oval plates on hand, but circle regular ones work fine too. Cut the middle, flat area out of one plate.

Craft whatever fanciful sea creatures you like with our Aquatic Craft Kit and then build an aquarium for them. Get things swimming with our tutorial below! Prepare paper plates -- if you're using a white plate, paint the inside of one plate blue. Use a pair of scissors or a craft knife to cut out the inside circle of the other paper plate. Make sea creatures -- craft some sea creatures using our Aquatic Craft Kit. We made a few little blow-fish and a jellyfish to start. But get creative and make whatever you like! Craft background -- use fuzzy sticks and sticker sheets in kit to shape pieces of coral reef and seaweed. Glue shell beads and other doodads from kit along the bottom edge of the plate to create a sea floor. Glue coral reef and seaweed throughout as well. Attach sea creatures -- hot glue the sea creatures you made onto the background keeping in mind to steer clear of the outside edges of the plate that will be covered up in the next step. Attach cover to aquarium -- glue piece of plastic wrap or cellophane to inside of the cut paper plate and trim to fit.

Paper plates are a key item in our craft box. They are so useful as a paint palette whenever Jessica is doing painting or as the basis of a craft project. Jessica enjoyed scrunching up the tissue paper and having little seaweed balls too. She was really pleased with her aquarium. It was such a nice simple pre-school craft activity. This is great!

Draw a straight line through the plate, about an inch and a half from the edge. Cut along that line. Paint the inside of the larger piece of paper plate light blue. You can use watercolors or a watered down acrylic paint. Let the paint dry.

Create a miniature underwater world with a paper plate, colorful paper, and cereal. Googly eyes add a certain cuteness to simple pieces of paper, cardboard tubes, and other such recyclables. In this particular case, the cuteness is inside two paper plates made to look like an aquarium.
