Thanks for joining me here at the SerenityThroughSweat blog, this is the third of a three post series that all kind of ties together. To summarize, finding calm in the chaos is a mental skill of being able to relax within ourselves when things start going crazy. The only way to do that is to actively put ourselves in uncomfortable situations and develop a level of comfort there. Most of us probably have a friend, family member, or co-worker, who we can describe as calm. But what does that mean, and how does it help us on our way to serenity? As a martial artist and a lifelong grappler, this speaks volumes to me, and it is a paradigm that I believe most martial artists have, often times without realizing it.

Many consider harmless, nice guys as good men. But is that really a good man? Could they step up and stop an elderly person from being mugged or step in and stop a vicious rapist who is attacking an innocent woman? Or is this the man we see on those television shows, who just turn the other way when they see these things happening, and keeps on walking, or worse, records it with their phone as they watch a tragedy unfold? As martial artists and warriors, we know that a good man is a very dangerous man. He loves his wife and his family, does a good job at his work, and may seem just like the harmless man, that is, until he is required to unleash the dragon. THAT is when we see the difference between the two. A harmless man has no choice about being a pacifist; he is harmless and not capable of defending himself or others. The dangerous man, on the other hand, chooses to live in peace as much as he can, but has the ability to be even more vicious than the most hardened criminal. He is a very dangerous man, but keeps that side of himself under control. To his family, he was just a father. They never saw him hurt anyone or be violent. But, when the shit hit the fan, and his family was attacked, he turned into a very dangerous, killing machine, ripping his enemies to threads.

Jefferson used the Latin phrase in the following letter to James Madison :. Societies exist under three forms sufficiently distinguishable. Without government, as among our Indians. Under governments wherein the will of every one has a just influence, as is the case in England in a slight degree, and in our states in a great one. Under governments of force: as is the case in all other monarchies and in most of the other republics. To have an idea of the curse of existence under these last, they must be seen.

Posted January 17, In honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means. Then will our world know the blessings of peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it. It is also the last article of my creed. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and its errors, its successes and its setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned.

Let us not neglect our work so that we may cultivate peace where we will never encounter situations that requires our tools. And navigating that path requires us to find our calm, foster our comfort and maintain a peaceful practice. That being said, we must be aware of the dangers that surround us and be prepared for the worst that could happen. Only by fostering a sense of comfort through times of discomfort, whether naturally occurring or manufactured, can we truly be comfortable. About the Author: Bohdi Sanders. For Educators.
