It means they've been through a tournament against many tough opponents and come out on top, usually time and time again. But when it comes to champions, there are some who stand out even among their peers. Being a champion doesn't just mean winning tournaments, though. These champions are ranked according to some of their greatest deeds, not just how well they've done in tournaments. Also included are former champions, characters who held the title at one point in the series but no longer do. Up first is the former champion of the Hoenn region, Wallace. Wallace is a flamboyant character who was also once a Gym Leader, making him a rare case of a Gym Leader moving up to the champion level. By the time of Journeys , Wallace is no longer the champion, but he insists on battling Ash anyway, just for the fun of it. Ash wins mostly offscreen, so Wallace doesn't offer much evidence of his skill. Alder is first introduced hitting on Officer Jenny unsuccessfully and nearly getting himself arrested, so he doesn't exactly make a good first impression. Alder's battle against Trip after the Junior Cup is more impressive, where Alder utilizes his Bouffalant's ability to gain the upper hand and defeat Trip's Serperior. Iris succeeded Alder as the Unova region's champion, making her the first and only one of Ash's traveling companions to attain the rank of champion.

The final test of any trainer in the Pokemon series is to take on the region's Champion in order to prove that they are the best of the best. Pokemon fans are likely familiar with the difficulty of these battles that challenge them to put their teams to the test against the strongest trainers in the game. However, some Pokemon Champions are far more memorable than others, whether that's due to their difficult nature, their involvement in the game's main story, or simply the effectiveness of their design. Although a game's Champion is usually the final boss, there are instances where that is not the case, such as in Pokemon Black and White where Team Plasma's Ghetsis plays the role of final boss and the Unova Region's Champion Alder isn't battled until the post-game. Additionally, a region like Paldea has multiple Champion-ranked trainers at a given time, while one like Alola has no Champion until the player becomes the first to claim the title. As such, the only Champions considered here will be the ones known to currently hold the title at the time their game takes place, discounting player characters and former Champions. Likely the most iconic and memorable Champion in the eyes of many fans is Cynthia, who is the Champion of Gen 4's Sinnoh Region.

Fielding his best and strongest Pokemon in each tournament, Ash's League record is one of crushing defeats, last-minute comebacks, and victories that were nothing short of miracles. If there's a running thread throughout these main event showdowns, it's that Ash's team always represented the best of the region that he found himself inside of, even if he was on the losing end of a bout against trainers who would eventually go on to achieve Pokemon fame and glory. With his current journey across the globe wrapping up, we're taking a look at the most pivotal tournaments that helped shape Ash into a master trainer Sorry Orange Islands fans, the filler arc of the Orange League doesn't make the cut and which episodes you can catch all that pocket monster action in.
