Sign In. Primer Hide Spoilers. Yesterday I watched "Project Almanac" which was also about time travel. The discussion board was full of threads about the temporal paradoxes created in the movie. One thread mentioned movies that did a good job with the time travel theory and "Primer" was mentioned, so here I am. I don't consider myself a dumb or inattentive person; I typically don't need plots spelled out for me and I understood the premise, however, somewhere mid-movie they lost me. Characters were mentioned whom I hadn't heard before and nor did I know their relationship to the main characters. Then it got to the point where I didn't know what time frame they were in or who I was looking at because every time the two main characters went back there would be a double of them. It all just got too confusing; to the point I actually watched it twice to see if I missed something. Even with watching it twice I couldn't quite figure it all out. There dialog was too ambiguous and the jump cuts from scene to scene left me behind. What's amazing is that the movie had a narrator--and it was needed--but he added very little to helping comprehend this movie. Time travel movies are naturally confusing because of the paradoxes and conundrums in them, the last thing I need is ambiguity on top of confusion. Was this review helpful?
I bought it sight-unseen for my husband for his birthday. It's not just primer imdb idea that God-like powers have been placed in the hands of flawed human beings

This project is beyond their day jobs. The project truly does belong to Aaron and Abe, as they use all their free time working on it, primarily trying to overcome the many engineering related problems they've encountered. It is during one of his tests with the invention running that Abe discovers that a protein inside the main unit has multiplied much more rapidly than it could in nature. Rather than the invention being a protein super incubator, Abe, using himself as a guinea pig, and a very meticulous one at that, discovers that the invention can be used as a time machine.

Chip Carruth Thomas Granger. Aaron's plan for the two of them is to use the invention to win big in the stock market by knowing through the time travel what has happened in the market. You might enjoy this film if you are a college kid trying too hard to have "different" tastes from others, but if you want an actually compelling or rewarding film experience, ignore all the hype and give Primer a miss. By the way, the attention to detail in the beginning is great. Sub plots are left unresolved almost as a rule and side characters just pop in and out of existence like electrons at the LHC. There are very clearly understood rules of this game. The UK DVD cover for Primer describes the film as 'Donnie Darko for grown-ups'; if, like me, you found Donnie Darko hard to wrap your head around, prepare to be completely and utterly perplexed by this baffling and ultimately very boring sci-fi oddity. Shane uses the cheapest trick in the book: he makes the plot so impossible to follow that one never gets the chance to criticize it, i. Almost nothing was explained. This is one great movie. So we know that the problem will be one of multiple instances of characters.
Well, the answer to that only Shane Carruth, writer and director of the film, may know, but my best guess is that he had no other choice.
Carruth clearly has a lot of talent. It moves along, it's clever, it held my attention. This caused some unforeseen problems: the editing software couldn't handle the sound properly, and two months of editing were needed just to synchronize the audio to the video. I have to say this is an astounding movie to me. In the end, this is a really interesting story concept, executed really really badly. The first 45 minutes or so are incredibly boring. This is just an entirely pointless scene involving a possible subplot that was never developed. It seemed as if the things they did could actually happen. I am not one of those egotistical reviewers that claim to be more intelligent than they really are or pretend to understand something although I don't. Carruth notes that a total of 80 minutes of usable footage was shot; the final film is 78 minutes. Then he complains later in the film that his handwriting is poor and he can't read. Whether the impossible to unravel plot is a case of deliberate obfuscation taken a step too far or just the result of bad story-telling I cannot say for certain, but when a film is too puzzling to be solved, even after trawling the internet for answers, and proves such a chore to finish even at only 78 minutes long, then I have no choice but to deem it a total failure. Ver com a barbara. Apart from the tedious framing and bad lighting, the sound recording was so poor one might not even have noticed the rambling, arcane script.
