Don't we all know this problem? You're tying your shoes and suddenly the little plastic piece holding the string ends together, flies off into the sunset as you pull the strings tight. Oh no - the strings will start fraying and pull apart in no time - what now? Simply print these aglets in your favorite color on your trusted SLA printer, then screw them onto the ends of your laces. Your laces are now safe again. Pro-Tip: You might want to cut off the frayed ends of your laces and quickly melt and compress the ends with a lighter. This will make inserting the ends into the new aglets way easier.

Despite their simplicity, aglets perform several functions:. If you were one of those people searching for the name for the tip of a shoelace, you have your answer. If you'd like to learn more about aglets, read on! In the past, most aglets were made of metal, and were created by either rolling or crimping a small strip of metal directly onto the shoelace. The photo at right shows an antique aglet tool that would likely have been used by a shoe repairer. These are usually attached in the factory by either gluing or crimping. A typical plastic aglet begins with acetate tape, twice the width of the required aglet, which is wrapped around a section of the uncut shoelace. Carefully controlled heat — and often a solvent such as acetone — is applied at the same time, which just melts the tape directly onto the shoelace as well as bonding the tape onto itself. When cooled, the wrapped section of shoelace is cut through the middle, leaving half of the wrap on each side of the cut. This single operation creates two aglets: One attached to the end of the cutoff section of shoelace, the other attached to the start of the next uncut section of shoelace.

Getting tired of your aglets the plastic parts on the ends of your shoelaces falling apart or becoming damaged, your shoelaces getting frayed and your style being cramped because of it? Look no further, here's an instructable on how to fix yourself a couple of new, and extremely durable, aglets. What you will need for this are basically just three things, aside from your shoelace. First you should get hold of some extremely fine plastic line. Fishing line would probably work, as long as you can find one thin enough. I'm using a plastic line that's meant for sewing beads and such to clothes, it's about as fine as the hair on my scalp. This would probably also work with regular fabric thread, the key is to have it as fine as you possibly can get hold of. Even though thicker thread is stronger we're going to use it in a way that makes the thinner thread both strong and durable. Second thing you're going to need superglue, the faster it dries the better. It's also easier if you can find a superglue with a brush already in the bottle as it will facilitate steps further down the road.
