The film chooses to focus on three characters: Natasha Rostov Audrey Hepburn , Pierre Bezukhov Henry Fonda , and Prince Andrei Mel Ferrer, who was married to Audrey Hepburn at the time , which is understandable, though it does turn the film into a love triangle. It often felt, he said, like scenes that probably took ten pages or even chapters were flying by in 30 seconds. Of course, any time you cast big stars those Hollywood stars with established personas it nearly always skews the movie in favor of the stars and away from the story.

Thus, it must inevitably slight: a many of the characters who bring joy to reading the novel - the princely father of the Kuragins, Sonja's story, Nicholas falling in love with Marya, the forgiveness by Bolkonsky Ferrer of Anatole Kuragin when his leg is amputated on a table beside which he is lain out, etc. Slow, regal, and peppered with brilliance, this epic falls short of classic but it's still a visual feast. The massiveness of the sets, the gigantic cast of thousands, the costuming, the surge of vast military forces in conflict, the burning of Moscow, the disastrous retreat of Napoleon's conquering hordes in the midst of a brutal and paralyzing Russian winter all this and more is depicted in a way that impresses one with the fact that millions of dollars had gone into the making.
