Hairspray follows a Tracy Turnblad Nikki Blonsky , a full-figured teenage girl who auditions to be on her favorite dance series, The Corny Collins Show. While Tracy's audition is ultimately a success and she becomes a permanent member of the show, she still is forced to confront certain obstacles such as not fitting the "traditional standards" of women and beauty, institutionalized racial segregation, and Velma Von Tussle Michelle Pfeiffer who despises Tracy because of her appearance. Overall, Hairspray is a fun, entertaining musical that still makes poignant commentary on social issues. Hairspray is a film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn is an adaptation of the John Waters film. Hairspray even honors Waters and his original Hairspray movie by having the legendary director make a cameo appearance as the "flasher who lives next door".
