SUVs have become so ubiquitous in the American way of life that we hardly stop to realize just how much things have changed over the last forty years. What were once rugged, go-anywhere, do-anything machines that offered off-road capabilities, have turned into car-based pseudo-wagons that have all but replaced the humble sedan. Plenty of room, decent fuel economy, and strong safety scores mean the SUV will continue to be the ride of choice for millions and millions of people. If we roll the clock back a few decades, back to a time when disco was king and an entire generation of Americans was growing up, things were very different. SUVs were far from the car-based family machines of today. Instead, they were ruggedly designed to take their owners out to high-elevation campsites, remote beaches, or wherever the spirit of adventure drew their soul.
