Parents need to know that this movie is a celebration and an onslaught of intense, cartoonish violence, though it's probably a bit tamer than some of today's films. The hero, Mad Max Mel Gibson is actually a good and kind soul with a loving family that he goes home to at the end of a long day of high-speed…. The point of Mad Max is to rile up its viewers with outlandish portrayals of extreme violence. The bad guys seem to outnumber the good guys, and just about anything goes. The bad guys never seem to regret or reconsider their behavior. In fact, the crazier they are, the more followers they seem to have. The good guys do their job as if it's only a matter of time before they're killed; it's a rather hopeless movie under its good-time surface. The hero tries to get away from it all with his wife and child, but he is severely punished for thinking that there's a way out from all the violence. In spite of the overwhelming violence and hopelessness of this post-apocalyptic future, Max is a decent role model, if you can overlook the fact that his job requires high-speed chases, guns, and a great deal of violence. At home, he is very loving with his wife and child, and when things begin to get tough, his first thought is to try and protect them.

American institutions, from the presidency to Oprah , are all fair game for spoofs and satires, some of which may not make a lot of sense to younger viewers. This ribald show is not in the business of promoting any values other than a good laugh. Celebrities and authority figures are mocked, stereotypes and disabilities are played for laughs, and so on. Parents need to know that this animated series leaps straight from the pages of venerable satire classic MAD magazine and offers the same parodies of popular TV shows and movies and other sketches. The jokes come fast and furious and are both witty and juvenile — in other words, exactly the kind of thing that…. Anything that's a hit with fans -- especially all of the big movies and TV shows -- is ripe for being taken down a notch with well-done parody, which simultaneously makes fun of something while also recognizing its pop-culture value. That's the formula that MAD magazine has perfected over the years, and while it's not outright mean-spirited in most cases, there's no concretely positive take-away, either. The artists behind MAD don't take themselves too seriously, nor do they take anyone or anyone else too seriously. Some parodies of popular films and TV shows feature over-the-top explosions and shootouts, but it's all played for laughs.
